Houlakia is a small cove north of Agios Stefanos, known for its smooth, rounded pebbles and clear water rather than sand and sunbeds. The area around it is mostly residential: family homes lived in all year, holiday houses owned by Greeks and foreigners, and some rental properties. Many of these homes are not on a sewer and rely on a private septic tank or cesspit.

Residential tanks behave differently from hotel tanks. A family home may go a long time between emptyings, until relatives arrive for the summer and the tank fills in a few weeks. Older absorbing cesspits also lose capacity over the years as the soil around them clogs, so a pit that used to last a year may now need emptying far more often. We empty both, and after a visit we can tell you whether your pit seems to be draining as it should.

You reach Houlakia through Agios Stefanos, on the road north of the New Port. In summer that road carries ferry, taxi and beach traffic, and it gets particularly busy when ships come in. We try not to arrive at the same moment as a big ferry, and we plan visits for the early morning where we can.

The lanes between houses are narrow, and many homes have room for a single car at most. Let us know if the tank is inside a courtyard or a back garden so we bring enough hose, and if the truck has to stop in the lane, a word with your neighbours beforehand makes everything easier.
