Cesspit and Septic Tank Cleaning in Mykonos

Metafores Lymaton Santorinaios cleans cesspits and septic tanks across Mykonos, removing the settled sludge and the floating scum layer as well as the liquid. We are a family business working on the island since 1995, with vacuum tankers that reach villas, houses and businesses from Chora to Ano Mera. Call or WhatsApp +30 693 673 2110 to book a cleaning.

How it works

A typical cleaning takes place in one visit. The steps are the same whether it is a small house in Ano Mera or a large villa above Psarou.

  1. 1You call or WhatsApp us with the location, the type of tank if you know it, and roughly how full it is.
  2. 2We agree a time and send a tanker that suits the volume and the access road.
  3. 3We open the tank, pump out the liquid, then break up and remove the sludge and scum.
  4. 4We look at the inlet and outlet pipes, the baffles and the visible condition of the lid and walls.
  5. 5We tell you what we found, close the tank, and take the waste in the sealed tanker to the licensed municipal wastewater treatment plant of Mykonos (DEYA Mykonou).

More details

Cleaning is not the same as emptying

A simple emptying pumps out the liquid so the tank has room again. It is quick and it solves the immediate problem. A full cleaning goes further: we break up and remove the sludge that has settled on the bottom and the crust of scum that floats on top, and we rinse the walls where it is needed.

Sludge builds up slowly and takes the place of usable volume. If it is never removed, the tank fills faster every year, and solids start to pass into the outlet pipe or the soakaway, where they block the ground and stop the liquid from draining. A proper cleaning resets the tank and protects the parts of the system that are expensive to dig up.

  • Emptying: liquid pumped out, capacity restored for now
  • Cleaning: liquid, sludge and scum removed, tank checked
  • Worth doing when the tank fills faster than it used to, before the summer season, or after you buy a property

Absorption cesspits, sealed tanks and septic tanks

Most properties in Mykonos have one of three systems, and each needs a slightly different approach.

An absorption cesspit has an open bottom or perforated walls, so the liquid soaks into the ground and the solids stay behind. Over the years the bottom and walls clog with fine sludge and the pit stops draining. Cleaning removes that layer and often gets it working again, although ground that is fully saturated may need more than a cleaning.

A sealed tank is watertight, so nothing leaves it. It fills up and has to be emptied regularly; a periodic full cleaning stops sludge from eating into the volume you pay to empty. A septic tank has chambers where solids settle and partly break down before the liquid moves on to a soakaway. Its sludge and scum must be taken out from time to time, or solids reach the soakaway and ruin it. Not sure which one you have? We can tell you on site.

Signs your cesspit needs cleaning

A tank rarely fails without warning. If you notice any of the signs below, it is cheaper to clean it now than to deal with a backup in the middle of August.

How often you need a full cleaning depends on the size of the tank, how many people use it, whether it is sealed or absorbing, and how the property is used. A villa that is full of guests all summer needs attention far more often than a house used for a few weeks a year. After the first cleaning we can suggest a sensible routine for your property.

  • Toilets, showers or sinks draining slowly
  • Gurgling sounds in the pipes
  • Smells near the tank or inside bathrooms
  • Wet patches or unusually green grass over the soakaway
  • The tank needs emptying much more often than before
  • Sewage coming back up through the lowest drain

Why choose Metafores Lymaton Santorinaios

We have been cleaning cesspits in Mykonos for 30+ years. As a family business we know the island's older stone-built tanks, the newer sealed systems in recent villas, and the narrow roads that lead to them.

Our fleet of 6 MAN and Volvo vacuum tankers, with capacities of 10 to 30 m³, lets us match the truck to the job instead of forcing a large tanker up a lane it cannot climb. The same team also clears blocked drains, so if the problem turns out to be in the pipes rather than the tank, we deal with it in the same visit. We tell you plainly what we see and what it will cost.

Frequently asked questions

Who does cesspit cleaning in Mykonos?

Metafores Lymaton Santorinaios is a family business based in Marathi that has cleaned cesspits and septic tanks all over Mykonos since 1995. We remove the liquid, the sludge and the scum, and check the inlet and outlet. Call or WhatsApp +30 693 673 2110 to book.

How much does it cost to clean a septic tank in Mykonos?

The price depends on the volume, how easy the tank is to reach and how far it is from our base; a tank with a lot of hardened sludge may need more time or more than one load. Send us the details by phone or WhatsApp and we will give you a quote.

How often should a cesspit be cleaned in Mykonos?

It depends on the size of the tank, the number of people using it and the type of system. Sealed tanks are emptied whenever they fill up and need a full cleaning from time to time; absorption cesspits and septic tanks need their sludge removed before it starts blocking the ground. For holiday properties in Mykonos, the best time is before the summer season starts.

What is the difference between emptying and cleaning a cesspit?

Emptying pumps out the liquid so the tank has space again. Cleaning also removes the sludge on the bottom and the scum on the surface, which is what keeps the tank from filling up faster and protects the soakaway.

My absorption cesspit in Mykonos does not drain any more. Can cleaning fix it?

Often, yes. In many cases the bottom and walls are simply clogged with fine sludge, and a full cleaning lets the liquid soak away again. If the surrounding ground is saturated, cleaning alone may not be enough, and we will tell you so honestly.

Do I need to be at the property when you clean the tank?

Not necessarily. We need access to the tank lid and a place for the tanker to park close enough for the hoses. Many villa owners and property managers in Mykonos simply send us the location and access details and we report back after the job.
