Fanari is the area around the Armenistis lighthouse, at the north-west tip of Mykonos. The hillsides look out over the sea towards Tinos, and they are covered with private villas, many of them rented out by the week in summer. Properties are spread out on large plots, away from any sewer, and each one has its own septic tank, holding tank or wastewater treatment unit.
A large villa with a pool, guest rooms and staff quarters produces a lot of wastewater, and villas with treatment units also need the sludge removed regularly or the unit stops doing its job. Private roads, gates and discretion
Many villas in Fanari are reached by private roads with electric gates, and some driveways are steep or end in a tight turning space. Before a first visit we ask for the location pin, the gate code or a contact who will open up, and a note of where the tank lid is. If the drive is too tight for the truck, we stay at the gate and run hose down to the tank.
